Five Single Malt Scotch Whiskies to Drink This Autumn

The Deeper Pour: Five Single Malt Scotch Whiskies Specially Selected for Autumn

Autumn deserves a better dram. The season turns, the light softens, and suddenly the whiskies you reach for change too. There's something about the smell of woodsmoke and fallen leaves that calls for depth, character, and a glass worth sitting with.

The Deeper Pour is our autumn collection — five specially selected single cask whiskies, each chosen for a different moment in the season. Whether you're fireside, out on a crisp afternoon walk, or pulling a hipflask from your coat pocket at the top of a hill, there's a dram here for you.

1. Laphroaig 20-Year-Old | Islay Single Malt | £199

For: An evening by the fire

Tasting Note: An immediate hit of aromatic smoke, joined by medicinal notes, dried lemon and earthy, ashy notes. Later menthol appears with notes of band aids and creosote on  wood. This has everything what makes Laphroaig, Laphroaig. At this age the smokiness usually takes a back seat, but surprisingly this ‘Laffie’ does the opposite. It retains its phenolic character even at 20 years old. Not surprisingly, the smokiness of this medium bodied dram lingers on in the finish.

Our Recommendation: This is a fireside dram. Pour it after dark, let the room go quiet, and give it time to open in the glass. The smoke will carry you through the evening.

2. Glen Elgin 15-Year-Old | Speyside Single Malt | £105

For: A long autumn lunch

Tasting Note: A pleasant and intriguing aroma, starting with warm apple pie, then a hint of honeysuckle, followed by super ripe nectarines and raisins in the back. Digestive biscuits form a steady background. Well balanced. A nice and elegant dram with a sweet/malty finish. Like having the last bite of your apple pie.

Our Recommendation: Serve this one alongside a sharp blue cheese and oatcakes, or pour it after a classic apple tarte tatin. An autumn Sunday has rarely required anything more.

3. Dailuaine 15-Year-Old | Speyside Single Malt | £115

For: A hipflask on the hill

Tasting Note: Dried figs, pecans, dried apricots and buttered toast. A hint of garden clover honey. Sweet and fruity with a smooth body. A very pleasant whisky with a medium long finish of dried fruits.

Our Recommendation: This is a dram made to be carried. Tuck it into your coat pocket for a hike on the hill, a coastal path, a long walk through the trees when the leaves are turning. Pour a measure at the top. Autumn tastes like this.

4. Glenlossie 14-Year-Old | Cask Strength | Speyside Single Malt | 54.4% ABV | £95

For: An indulgent pairing

Tasting Note: Lovage with a hint of creamy toffee, polishing wax, drying tobacco with fresh oranges and brandied cherries. A full fruitiness develops in the taste. Remarkably light body, nevertheless really pleasant. The complex nose is beautifully balanced in the taste. It all ends in a not too long slightly drying, very agreeable finish with a hint of brasil nuts. A crowd pleaser.

Our Recommendation: Take your time with this crowd-pleasing whisky and pair it with a square of dark chocolate for an indulgent treat.

5. Inchgower 14 Year Old | Speyside Single Malt | 48.8% ABV | £94

For: A crisp afternoon walk

Tasting Note: Grassy, floral like cut flowers. Buttered toast with marmalade gives a malty/fruity note. Picture yourself in an early summer garden, plucking flowers for a bouquet to put in a vase, and then sipping a cup of chamomile tea in the house with the garden doors open. A very nice and refreshing dram.

Our Recommendation: This is the perfect outdoor dram — the afternoon on the hillside, the glass shared with good company in the cold.
