Falkland: The True Cradle of Scotch Whisky

Saltire Rare Malt is based in Falkland, Fife - and for good reason.

This beautiful Scottish market town in the Kingdom of Fife grew up around the 15th century Falkland Palace. In 1494, King James IV, staying at the Palace, issued the famous order: “8 bolls of malt to Friar John Cor, wherewith to make the water of life.” It is considered the birth certificate of Scotch Whisky.

Saltire Rare Malt now sits in the market square, directly opposite Falkland Palace. Exactly 530 years after that first recorded dram, the story has come full circle.

It started, as many good things do, with a quiet obsession.

Two gentlemen from the Kingdom of Fife spent years seeking out exceptional casks - following their progress, watching them mature, waiting for the right moment. A private collection, carefully curated, growing year by year.

Then came the obvious question: what’s the point if no one else gets to taste it?

That’s the moment Saltire Rare Malt was born. Two collectors who simply decided that whisky this good deserves to be opened and enjoyed - and that the pleasure always tastes better when it’s shared.

Who we are

Saltire Rare Malt grew from a lifelong friendship between Nigel Heywood and Keith Rennie. Over three decades, the two have sought out fine and rare single malts - driven by a shared love for exceptional whisky and the pleasure of discovering something truly special.

Alongside founders Keith and Nigel, every whisky is selected in collaboration with Hans and Becky Offringa, better known as The Whisky Couple. Internationally respected whisky writers, speakers and Keepers of the Quaich, they bring decades of knowledge, curiosity and expertise to every bottling.

Together, they help ensure each release is chosen not only for its quality, but for its character.
