Vanilla butter cream cookies. Malty, accompanied by milk chocolate and a fresh note of lemon zest. In the background a very light savoury note, umami-like, as beef bouillon. Imagine braising meat in butter. A very interesting and fairly complex dram, but still easy going. Versatile too, as it comes to pairing with food. Oxtail soup will enhance the umami, whereas lemon cake will lift up the citrus notes.

Built in 1897 by James Buchanan, one of the famous Victorian whisky barons, to produce malt whisky for his Black & White blended Scotch. After a change of ownership, Glentauchers became a building block for the Teacher’s brand and when Pernod-Ricard added the distillery to its Chivas Brothers-portfolio in 2005, this interesting but underrated single malt became an important part of Ballantine’s, which it still is today. Official distillery releases are rare, such as the 15-year-old in the Ballantine’s single malt series. Some independent bottlings have been appearing on the market now and then. The distillery is the first in the Chivas Group to have implemented mechanical vapour recompression (MVR) which significantly reduces the energy costs/use. This system will be implemented in all Pernod-Ricard distilleries in due course.
