An immediate hit of aromatic smoke, joined by medicinal notes, dried lemon and
earthy, ashy notes. Later menthol appears with notes of band aids and creosote
on wood. This has everything what makes Laphroaig, Laphroaig. At this age the
smokiness usually takes a back seat, but surprisingly this ‘Laffie’ does the
opposite. It retains its phenolic character even at 20 years old. Not
surprisingly, the smokiness of this medium bodied dram lingers on in the
finish. -
Supposedly built in 1815 by the Johnston brothers, the distillery was kept in the family until the death of the last descendant, Mr Hunter, who left lock, stock and barrel to his secretary, Mrs. Bessie Williamson, in 11954. She would become the first female distillery manager and owner of the 20th century and took very good care of the staff and the community of Islay at large. When she retired in 1967 the ownership would change hands a few times. Since 2014 Laphroaig is owned by
the Japanese drinks behemoth Suntory Global Spirits.Water source
